Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Is flying safe?
Yes, in fact it is safer then riding in a car.
How much does it cost?
Cost depends greatly on how long it takes to complete. There are many ways to save on costs. Plan on spending about $7000 to get a private pilot certificate. The final price depends on several factors and some of which you can control.
Do I have to buy a pilot kit to start?
No, all that’s required is to start flying. Study materials should be purchased as soon as possible. Being prepared for each flight is one of many cost-cutting methods.
Is it hard to fly?
Learning to fly is a challenge, just like learning anything new. It’s no more difficult then learning to read and play music, or any other skill.
What is a lesson like?
A typical lesson consists of three parts: a ground lesson to discuss what you will be learning, and to answer any questions; a flight lesson; then a briefing at the end, to discuss the flight. The best way to answer this is to see one for yourself--let’s go for a discovery flight!
Can I fly anything I want?
You will initially start with a basic airplane, then work up to the more complex airplanes.
What if I have not flown in a while but want to get back into aviation?
Centex Flight Training can work with clients on getting back into the swing of things.
From where do you fly?
Our instructors primarily fly out of Georgetown, TX. They can also meet in Austin or anywhere in south Texas for training.
Do I have to get a physical?
Yes, a medical exam is required for a student pilot certificate and solo flight. Here is a listing of local examiners.
I hear that there is a lot of studying to do. Is that true?
There is a lot to learn, and sometimes it can seem overwhelming. That’s where your instructor’s expertise and experience will be invaluable. Like anything else, what you get out of the training depends on the time and effort you apply toward it.
Is there a background check?
You will need to provide a valid photo ID and birth certificate.
Do you work with international students?
Yes; you must have a US Visa and complete the TSA screening process. We will be happy to advise you on how to proceed. Please see our page on international students.
Do you offer professional pilot training?
Yes, we have trained several pilots that have gone on to the airlines and US Air Force. We can do your complete training from start to finish. It is important to let us know this your plan when you start training.
